Obtaining the right of abode without citizenship

Hello,
I would like to get advice from the experts on the forum.
Situation:
Both my husband and I come from the countries that do not allow dual citizenship. We would like to keep our respective citizenship as we are not sure where we are going to retire – his country, my country or the UK. Our current passports are quite convenient for traveling so there is no daily inconvenience to live in the UK with an ILR status. However, because of the aging parents, we might have to head back to our home countries for some years if the situation arises. If this happens, I am so afraid that we might lose an ILR.
Question:
Someone told me that we can get around the issue by getting the right of abode but opt out to obtain a British passport when we go through the process of applying for the citizenship. I am not sure if this would work... If I go through this process, wouldn’t I just become a British without a passport?? Can I still claim that I don’t have British citizenship?
