Female born 1948 in Kenya
Her mother born 1924 in Kenya but left in 1973 for South Africa and became naturalised South African in1979
Her Father born 1920 in South Africa, but lived in Kenya until 1973
Mother and father married 1946 in Kenya
Mother’s mother was born in England in 1901.
Can the form UKM be used to obtain nationality by double descent, or is an ancestry visa the only way? TIA for any responses.

I believe that the female would be eligible to apply for British citizenship through Form UKM. The best way to find out is to apply. The fees are only £80.
Be aware that her acquisition of British citizenship will not change the citizenship of any children already born to her.

Do you know if all documents submitted need to be originals? Getting copy Kenyan birth certificates is a nightmare!

Generally, yes. You will also need all the relevant marriage certificates (of the grandparents and parents).
You will almost certainly require the same documents for an ancestral visa.

I called the British home office today to check and they said that citizenship by “double descent” doesn’t exist!

Have a read about the Romein case. She was successful and will likely set a precedent. Some members have reported success too.
