be without passport for 6 months??

I have lived in the UK for ten years. I have ILR. But it's a sticker in my expired passport. So I want to upgrade to either a BRP or citizenship. I meet all the conditions, and I know of no reason either would not be approved.
If I only do BRP now, then decide to apply for naturalisation later, I would have to go through two application processes and two sets of fees. So it makes sense to just apply for naturalisation straight away.
But the process can take six months, possibly more, and the application says I would need to submit my USA passport. I can't give up my passport for six months: I need it for travel. I travel regularly, and I certainly want to go home for Christmas!
Any solutions?
