Hi,
Today I applied for naturalisation and now awaiting approval.
Can I apply for passport as soon as I receive approval letter or do I need to get the ceremony done first. The reason I ask is that I’m planning to travel in early dec.

No you cannot. You can only apply for your first passport when you attend your ceremony and receive your certificate of naturalisation.
Remember if you attend your ceremony you become British and then you cannot travel with your BRP anymore. The naturalisation approval, ceremony and passport application could take several months, so you may not get to secure your passport before December. You may have to delay your ceremony and book it after your travels
