Citizenship application - does spouse need to submit her passport?

Dear Forum,
My wife is eligible to apply for ILR in December and having completed the 5-year route to settlement, I believe she will be eligible to apply for British Citizenship by naturalisation as soon as ILR is granted. When she applies for Citizenship will she need to send her passport away with the application, and how long is it likely to take? We were considering going away around the Christmas / New Year time, but didn't want to book anything until understanding the requirements.
