Child born abroad, British father.

Hello all,

My child will be born next month in Brazil with myself and my Brazilian wife. I am a British citizen born in the UK as were my descendants.

How can I get my child a British passport in order to travel back with my wife a month or two after his birth? I am only visiting for 5 weeks for his birth then I will return to my job in the UK.

My wife will be travelling on a spouse visa once accepted.

From what I can tell, as I am a British citizen born in the UK, he will automatically be a British citizen. Do we apply for a childs first passport as normal from Brazil after registering the birth in Brazil? Do they require my passport as I will obviously need that for my return a few weeks after his birth.

I appreciate anyone that can offer some advise.

If you are British otherwise than descent, which appears to be the case (you were not born abroad), then yes, your child is automatically British otherwise than by descent.

You need to apply for an overseas British passport here (click) and the documents required are also there.
