Hi All,

I am in a complex situation with Given name and Surname on my current Indian passport. If anyone can provide some advice this will be very helpful.

Issue: -In my Current Indian passport my Given name has part of my surname and is not as per my old expired passport. And all my UK immigration documents ( BRP card) is as per my old expired Indian passport. Recently I had applied for naturalization and in the application, I had put in my Given name and surname as per my current passport but the Home office has issued naturalization certificate my given name and surname as per my expired passport.

when I applied for my British passport, they have asked to change my given name and surname in my current passport. So I am planning to apply for re-issue of my Indian passport and had emailed VFS regarding Document required but they have responded back saying I can not apply for re-issue of my current passport once I have naturalized.

So now I am stuck and do not know what to do next .can someone please help me?

Please see below email to VFS and their response:

Subject: Documents required to align name as per my old passport

Dear Sir/Madam

I would like to enquire which all documents are required to correct my
Given name and Surname in my current Indian passport. My Current Indian
passport has part of my Surname in my Given name. Hence the Given name
and surname does not match my expired passport, and all my UK
immigration documents including UK naturalization certificate have the
Given name and Surname as par the expired passport.

Expired Indian Passport ( Correct)

Given Name : xxxxx

Surname : xxxxxxx xxxxx

Current Indian Passport ( Incorrect and needs to change)

Given Name : xxxxxx xxxxx

Surname : xxxxxx

When I applied for my first UK passport, they have asked me to correct
my Given name and Surname on the current Indian passport to be same as
the expired Indian passport or else they will not be able to issue my
first British passport.

I have filled the online passport re-issue application form but not
clear on what all documents do I need to submit with my application.

Kindly provide the list of documents for the above change.

Kind Regards

Xxxxx xxxxx xxxxxx

Hello

This a very common issue indeed.

When you are naturalised British, any inconsistency in your documents, especially passport vs. naturalisation certificate, is a big issue to get the British passport. HMPO insists on having fully consistent documents.

That email from VFS is good. When I spoke with HMPO over the phone, they told me they either need a correct passport or a letter/document from the issuing authority explaining that it cannot be corrected.

So try to print that email and send it to HMPO explaining that Indian authorities won't correct your passport as now you are in the process or losing Indian citizenship as you are British.

But to anyone reading this thread in the future: please fix any error in your foreign passport before applying for British Citizenship.

Hi
Many thanks for your advice. Do you think I should apply to change my name on the Naturalization certificate? Would the Home office change it based on my current name on the passport? I know there is a Form RR to correct the name. I know it cost £250, but as long as it can be done I am ok to pay for it.

Thanks

You can try that route. As you can't change the name on the passport, try to change it on the British citizenship certificate. But I am unsure about that process.

As long you are present the HMPO with a consistent documentation, they will be fine.
