If you have an arrangement with HMRC to clear the outstanding amounts and are in compliance then it should not be an issue to affect your application, unless you are taken to court over this.

not related, but..

how would non payment of voluntary NI contributions when unemployed or not receiving benefits would affect one being of 'good character'?

Voluntary NI contributions are just that, voluntary - you can't be judged on this.

Alterhase58 thanks for your comment
Yes I’m paying it to HMRC by direct debit monthly and it hasn’t been taken to court.
Another thing do I need to declare in my citizenship application as per my understanding I don’t need to but some expert comments will be appreciated.
TIA

No need to declare - over/under/late payments are not an offence and happen to many people in the course of dealing with HMRC.

Hi everyone,
I have a similar issue but mine is for penalties for not doing my self assessment for 2yrs. My penalty fee was £1450 and I have completed the payment. Pls do I need to declare this? If yes, under what session of the application for.
Thanks

Perhaps members could consult the caseworker guidance on "Good Character".

For the HMRC issues raised I would still suggest it's not necessary to disclose, unless you were taken to court. The guidance has only a few general references to tax.
