Hi,
I got my ILR last year.
My Son was born on 18th July 2020. We registered his birth in local council.
I assumed that he will not have to apply for British citizenship to apply for British Passport.
But when trying to apply for his passport online I enter the below details.
Do you live in the UK?
Yes
Date of birth
Given
Have you had a UK passport before?
No
Do you have any passports from other countries?
No
Do you have a naturalisation or registration certificate?
No
Why do you need to apply for a passport now?
Other
Based on my answers, it says
My son needs to have British nationality to get a UK passport.
Is it true? and am I wrong?

If your son was born after you gained ILR then he is British and can apply direct for a passport, and all that is needed is the birth certificate and your proof of ILR, as I understand. Can't comment on the options available online. Here's the link to the guidance for paper applications which should explain everything:

If your son was born in the UK on or after the date you got ILR, he is a British citizen otherwise than by descent and can apply for a passport directly.
At the moment, the Passport Office is only accepting applications from people with a demonstrable need to travel soon, thence the last few questions.
Keep in mind that as your child's basis of British citizenship is your ILR, you would be advised not to surrender your ILR BRP after you naturalise.

Thank you both for the replies.
I called the passport office to confirm and they said to send a covering letter with all details.
Regards

Please mind what secret.simon said.
Even a British passport is not a definitive proof of British citizenship. This means that even if your child gets a passport now, he/she can be asked later in life to demonstrate that he/she is a British citizen. This demonstration is not brought by his/her previous British passport but by your ILR that demonstrates that you were established at birth. So hold on tight on that ILR.

Thank you for this. I am writing a cover letter as asked by the Passport office. I have to mention that my son is automatically eligible for British passport but cannot find it in the policy guidance.

This is a well known fact and HMPO know all about it:
