Citizenship vs. ILR

Hi there, quick question.
My wife (Canadian) has been in the UK now for over 5 years on the 5 year route. We are about to apply for citizenship.
Question. Do you have to apply first for ILR then once ILR is achieved then apply afterwards for citizenship? (i.e., you can't just apply for citizenship).

I think I know the answer but just double checking.

regards,

Iain

She needs to have ILR first. She can only apply for British Citizenship after she holds ILR for 12 months unless she is married to a British Citizen (in the latter case she can apply for BC right after ILR).
