English language - Applying for Naturalisation as a British Citizen

Hello,

Subject: Seek clarification on English language - for my application for naturalisation as a British Citizen

I reside in the U.K. and will be applying for naturalisation shortly.
I got my ILR (indefinite leave to remain) in Jun 2013. When I had applied for my ILR, I did not taken any English language test. However, I had provided my successful 'life in UK' test then.
Please note I took my B1 English test 6 months ago and passed the same. I have a certificate to prove this.

Please refer to the 7 points below. This is what I intend to input in my application form for 'English language'. I needed the help of some senior people (moderators) here and shall be very thankful for your inputs.

1. Do you have a previous visa, entry clearance or leave to remain where you had to prove your knowledge
of English? = YES
2. Tell us the previous visa, entry clearance or leave to remain you had = INDEFINITE LEAVE TO REMAIN
3. Did you meet the knowledge of English requirement as part of an indefinite leave application made on or after 28 October 2013? = NO
4. Do you have a degree that was taught in English? = NO
5. Have you passed an approved English language test? = YES
6. Did the test assess your speaking and listening skills at a level equivalent to CEFR B1 or higher? = YES
7. How did you get your result? = CERTIFICATE

My questions are;
For point 1:
Should I put a "Yes" or a "No"
In June 2013, I did not taken any English exam. I do not remember clearly but I think in Jun 2013, only the 'life in UK test' was adequate to prove English language requirements. If I remember, I had also submitted a letter from my University in India to state that my Bachelors degree was taught in English. So, I proved my knowledge of English in Jun 2013 either with 'life in UK' or both 'life in UK' and the letter from my University in India. So is "YES" the correct answer.

For point 3:
Since I applied for my ILR in June 2013, I think my answer should be 'NO' as this question is about meeting English language requirements on or after Oct 2013. Is 'NO' the correct answer?

For point 4:
My university provided a letter to state that my degree was taught in English. When I first came to U.K. under HSMP in end 2008, this letter alone was enough to prove my English competency. So the answer to
"Do you have a degree that was taught in English?" should be a YES. But if I input YES, at the document stage it asks me to provide 'NARIC letter" that my degree in India meet or exceeds a UK bachelors degree.

As I have a B1 test taken a few months ago, I intend to answer with a "NO" to point 4, as this asks me to upload my B1 test certificate...which I have and can produce. So, is it fine to put a "NO" to point 4.

Thank you in anticipation of your support.

Regards
Raj

Hello again,

I am aware that my email below is a bit long.
I also feel I have answered the questions correctly.
But as I am about to spend GBP1330 for this online payment, I wanted someone to advise me so that I get it right first time.

I will be grateful for your reply.

Raj

Just a very quick reply - my take on this:
to keep things simple and especially as you have a current B1 test certificate, you could assume you didn't provide any English at the ILR stage and select the option for B1 Test and add your test certificate. All that matters is that you prove the English requirement, there is no requirement that you have to re-use something that was provided previously. The AN guidance clearly gives you a choice as to how you prove your English.

As for your Life in the UK test do you have the pass number and/or certificate?

Hi,

Thank you very much.
I took my life in UK in May 2013.
I have a paper copy which states 'Pass Notification Letter', so to answer your question I believe I have a certificate.

I had a look at the AN guidance doc. you sent. It states that for naturalisation one can satisfy the knowledge of language and life in the UK requirement when I have
• passed the Life in the UK test and also
• have a valid speaking and listening qualification in English at B1 CEFR orhigher.

I have both of the above (life in UK paased in 2013 & B1 English language in Jul 2020).

But the way the online application form is worded confuses. For e.g.
1. Do you have a previous visa, entry clearance or leave to remain where you had to prove your knowledge
of English? = I feel I should say YES because for ILR application I used my 'life in the UK test'.
4. Do you have a degree that was taught in English? = I feel I should say YES because my degree in India was taught in English and I have a letter from University to state that it was taught in English. But if I input YES, at the end it asks me to submit a NARIC letter that it is equivalent to an English UK degree...which I do not have. So, I am forced to state NO here, as a NO asks me for my B1 CEFR certificate, which is what I have.

What would your advice to me for my answers i.e. a YES to point 1 and a NO to point 4?

Regards
Raj

1) Answer: Yes

4) Answer: NO
Instead input B1 SELT details.

Upload both LIUK Certificate and English Test Reference/Certificate.

Apologies for my slow reply. Very unprofessional on my part...jut got bogged down with lots of other things that I was doing. I have taken note of your points and will apply (still not applied though I was planning to do so by end Feb 21).

Just as a precaution, as I live in the UK, the form I have filled in is below link. Hope that is fine.
