The AN online form asks if you have a valid passport. Select NO. It will ask about expired passport details then. Fill those in. You should have a valid ILR BRP. I believe you will be okay with an expired passport to apply for AN.

You have to prove your residence with your passport stamps. Worth adding a cover letter and mention that you did not travel outside UK from XYZ date (last time you entered UK) and you could not renew your passport thereafter. The AN form may ask for additional proof of residence for the period (after passport expired and before date of application). Maybe worth adding P60, employer letter etc for that period.

Hello, I'm tagging onto this post as my query is the same but the only difference is I'm going to use BOTA form.
I took the online application form for a test drive and found similar instructions as you said.
Can I take it that, as far as you know, I can also register as BC with an expire passport?
I remember seeing requirements re: valid passport before but is no longer found in the 'latest' (2019) guidance

Thanks:)

As long you have other valid form of ID i.e. ILR etc, expired passport should be okay. You may need to provide alternate documents to prove residence after the passport expired and before application date though.

Should be okay, if you have since remained in the UK and have no other travel document.
