Passport in Maiden name or Married name?

Hi,

I realise this has probably been asked before but I couldn't quite find a clear answer for my specific situation.

My wife was granted citizenship last month and is now applying for her first UK passport. Her preference would be for passport to be in her married name, however quite a few posts on here suggest it should match her current (Peruvian) passport? Her naturalisation certificate is in her maiden name, as were all her visas and BRP.

I'm not sure if it complicates things, but we have changed most other things into her married name (mortgage, bank accounts, college ID, NI number etc). Only really her passport is still in her maiden name.

Should we submit passport application in maiden name or married name?

If her first uk passport has to be in her maiden name, how and when is best to change it to married name? It's not vital obviously, just personal preference.

Thanks.

Get the British Passport first in maiden name as per the Peruvian passport/Naturalisation Certificate AND change the name later on. Otherwise, first you will have to change the name on the Peruvian passport.

Also your name must match the name on the Naturalisation Certificate also. First get the British Passport in the maiden name. Later on change the name and apply British Passport again in married name.

Thanks Cullinan.

Out of interest, I wonder at what point to most people on the spouse route change their name?

My wife initially kept most things in her maiden name but over time has changed them into her married name. She’s a bit worried about the inconsistency. I don’t think it does any harm, as far as I know there isn’t any actual requirement to change your name, it’s just preference? She’s due to renew her Peruvian passport later this year, so once that’s changed I guess she might then want to change her British Passort.

The problem is the name on the Naturalisation Certificate also. So keep things simple and do not complicate them. Will save you future headache.
