British Citizenship / Life in the UK Test with expired passport

My Romanian wife is applying for her British Citizenship (I'm British)

She has an expired Romanian Passport. (Trying to get this renewed at the Romanian consulate with her now married name has so far proved fruitless)

The British Citizenship Online application form states that an expired passport is acceptable for the process. However...part of the application process requires my wife to have passed the Life In The UK Test which appears to require a valid passport...

My wife has a provisional UK driving license but according to the LITUK advice line this is not an acceptable form of ID (despit many advice websites claiming that it is).

I'm looking for advice on what her options are?

Any help would be much appreciated.

See also Accepted forms of ID. I don’t see a driving licence listed.
Email nationalityenquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk for help if you do not have any of these documents.
