Passport return and questions after submission - British Citizenship application

Good day all,
I`m in the process of applying for British Citizenship online.
I have a few questions regarding what happens after I`ve submitted my citizenship application. I`ve not done it yet, it`s ready, I just need to pay.
1) Do I need to send away my passport at any point, if yes, how long does it normally take to receive it back again?
2) Once I`ve paid for the application, do I have to upload my documents within a certain time frame?
3) Do I need to attend the biometrics appointment within a specific time frame after I`ve paid for the application?
The reasons for all these questions, I`ve got a small window of opportunity where I can apply this year, however I may need to travel back to my country urgently without much notice.
