Moving abroad after submitting application

Hello everyone,

I have been going through this board to find information I need as much as possible for all day but I still cannot find the exact answers so please allow me to ask my questions.

I have got ILR last year and I have a passport (my original passport) that allows me visa free entry to the UK.

I have got a job offer recently that requires to relocate to an EU country. Although I would like to live in UK permanently, I would like to take the job and live abroad for a few years and come back as it will be good for my career. The company understands and has an intention to wait for me to relocate for giving me time to get UK citizenship unless it won’t be too long.

I have another 9 months to be eligible to apply for citizenship and then wait for 6 months to get the decision will be definitely too long for them so I would like to know if it’s possible to move abroad after I submit my application and biometric information without waiting for the decision.

I understand that I am allowed to travel abroad during the period and once it’s granted, I have to attend the ceremony in the UK which is no problem as I can come back to the UK for it. However, after the ceremony, if I want to apply for British passport within the UK right away, do I have to stay in the UK until I receive the passport?

If it’s allowed I was going to use my friend’s address in the UK to receive letters, passport etc as I won’t have my own address in the UK. Also which local council would be the one for the ceremony for me in this case?

Would this plan work or HO would question my intention to live in the UK permanently?

Do I have other options? For example, applying for UK passport in abroad but keep my original passport so I won’t be restricted for travelling.

Thanks in advance!

You can nominate a council of your choice in the form.

Naturalisation caseworker guidance wrote:(Page 36)If the applicant is abroad or is about to go abroad for a continuous period of more than 6 months, you should normally refuse the application and advise the applicant to re-apply, on their return to the UK, for permanent residence.

An exception may be made to the general rule, however, where any of the following apply:
• the applicant is undertaking voluntary work such as with the Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO)
the applicant is undertaking studies, training, or employment abroad which is necessary to pursue a UK based profession, vocation or occupation
• the absence forms part of an established pattern, such as in relation to employment at sea and the applicant is primarily based in the UK
