Neither I nor my wife have British citizenship, but we do both hold ILR for over a year.
Is it possible to apply for my child's citizenship without applying ourselves?

Which country was the child born?
How old is the child?

Hi, the child is 7 years old.
He was born in the US, and we moved here when he was 1 on a Tier 2 work visa. We got ILR 13 months ago.

For your child's application to be successful, they usually need to have at least one British parent. If neither of your child's parents are British, one of you needs to apply for citizenship before or at the same time as your child.

Thank you very much for the advice.
Part of my reluctance was that I have an upcoming business trip and need my passport. Is it ok to apply, and then travel abroad, or do I need to remain in the UK for the duration of the processing time?

You're free to travel. It's not an immigration application.
