British Citizenship & BRP near expiry

Hi,

I was granted ILR in 2013 and my BRP (which I've had for almost 10 years) says "Valid Until 10 April 2023".

I'm in the process of applying for citizenship but am concerned by the note on page 10 of Guide AN (link below) which states:
... a nationality application does not provide any immigration status while
it is being considered. You must ensure you have valid permission to stay in the UK
until you have had a decision on your application and attended your citizenship
ceremony.
Applications for citizenship take several months (based on timelines on here) so it's likely I won't be able to attend the ceremony until after my BRP has expired.

My question is: should I renew my BRP before applying for citizenship to avoid it expiring before I get my citizenship application result?

Or does it not matter if my BRP expires whilst waiting to get my result because my ILR is still valid regardless of BRP expiry?

Am very confused about the BRP expiry date and how it relates to ILR status.

Any replies would be hugely appreciated!

As you rightly note your ILR status does not expire, it is the government issued proof of that status I.e. the card that has an expiry date.
If there's is nothing you have ahead that will require you to prove immigration status personally don't see the need to renew the BRP card. Note that BRP is to be phased out and all recently issued ones expires on 31st December, 2024.

That's very hellpful, thank you.

So in theory someone could still apply for and get citizenship whilst having ILR status, but after their BRP has expired?

Same way when your Australian passport expires, it doesn't mean you're no longer Australian.

The passport is just a way to prove your identity. ILR BRP is just evidence that you have it.

Correct.
