On behlaf of my brother HMPO is asking for the original naturalisation certificate of my mother - I am loathe to send it in to them - would they accept a certified copy from the Post Office?

He has emailed them but they have not replied -

Or are we being too cautious in sending in the only real evidence of my mother right to being a british citizen as they don't accept her passport.

Generally they only accept originals, they are not just checking the details stated in documents they also check authenticity down to paper and ink…. Personally I had to send them my wife’s certificate and it came back, my own too plus original passports. Note a passport is a travel document not proof of citizenship, the certificate confers citizenship.

Yes I know a passport is a travel document but then they don't accept birth certificates of the child in question - we are not issued certificates of being UK citizens at birth so they just make it up as they go along.

I simply have no faith in them not losing it as then what evidence would my mother have she is a UK citizen as the passport is not accepted - a piece of paper is all there is.
