Registering a UK born child as British Citizen using MN1 online form

Dear Forum,

Firstly I apologize if my following questions have been asked many times before. My partner and I have been recently granted ILR status and are now applying to register our UK-born child to be a British citizen using the online MN1 form. We have the following questions (some questions may sound stupid so please forgive me):

1. The beginning of MN1 form asks for an email address and then asks "who does this email address belong to ?" Since the applicant would be my UK-born child and they do not have an email address themselves, can I answer the above question using my own personal email address but saying it belongs to my child (i.e., the applicant)? Similarly, could I put my own mobile phone number but say it belongs to my child (i.e., the applicant)?

2. My UK-born child is currently holding a valid foreign passport but an expired UK BRP card. The expired BRP card was issued a few years ago as a PBS dependant visa linked to my Tier-2 skilled worker visa. We never applied for ILR for this child when my partner and I were applying for our own ILRs. Based on the above information, should I answer "no" to the following MN1 form question for my child:" Have you had settlement in the UK?"

3. My child was born in a UK hospital but stayed there for a few days for checks, so when answering the following MN1 question related to their current address: "Date you lived there from", should I put my child's date of birth as the answer, or should I put the actual date my child came back home from the hospital?

4. Regarding the question on "the town of birth" for my partner and myself, should we put the "place of birth" shown on our passports (which was not a town but a province) as the answer? Or should we put the actual towns of our birth as the answer (which are however not shown on our passports)?

5. Regarding the question on the parents' marriage, my partner and I were married in the UK a few years ago before our child was born, and we have our UK marriage certificate, but we were also registered for our marriage in our home country a year later. When the MN1 form asked for the date of our marriage, should we put our UK marriage date or our marriage registration date in our home country?

6. We moved to our current address less than 3 years ago, could we still invite our neighbor who has a British passport to be one of our child's referees? If so, how could we answer the following MN1 question: "How does the referee know the applicant?"

7. Regarding our child's expired BRP card, the MN1 form asks if "the applicant is able to provide a BRP card with this application?" The nearest option to answer this question would be "Yes, and it is valid", because the other options either state the BRP card was lost or was never issued to my child, which we believe was not correct. So could I answer the above question by selecting the "Yes, and it is valid" option (despite the BRP card is no longer valid), and then proceed to provide the past expiry date of my child's expired BRP card?

8. For the supporting documents, we need to provide a letter of consent saying my partner and I both agree to let our child apply for British citizenship, does anyone know where we could find an official template for such a letter?

9. The two referees are also required to make declarations for our child's MN1 application, what does this mean? Does anyone know how could they make such declarations, please? For example, should the referees each write a letter making such a declaration?

Sorry for asking so many questions in one thread, but we would be really grateful if anyone could answer these questions. Many thanks.

Similarly, could I put my own mobile phone number but say it belongs to my child (i.e., the applicant)?Just say parent-which is the case of course.

Based on the above information, should I answer "no" to the following MN1 form question for my child:" Have you had settlement in the UK?"Correct

3. My child was born in a UK hospital but stayed there for a few days for checks, so when answering the following MN1 question related to their current address: "Date you lived there from", should I put my child's date of birth as the answer, or should I put the actual date my child came back home from the hospital? Just state the facts, use the date of arrival. It's not to trip you up....

4. Regarding the question on "the town of birth" for my partner and myself, should we put the "place of birth" shown on our passports (which was not a town but a province) as the answer? Or should we put the actual towns of our birth as the answer (which are however not shown on our passports)? As per passport.

UK marriage date.

6. We moved to our current address less than 3 years ago, could we still invite our neighbor who has a British passport to be one of our child's referees? If so, how could we answer the following MN1 question: "How does the referee know the applicant?" Referee should have known the child for three years, unless child is under 3.

You always need to answer correctly. Yes might work, alternatively include a note that it is expired.

8. For the supporting documents, we need to provide a letter of consent saying my partner and I both agree to let our child apply for British citizenship, does anyone know where we could find an official template for such a letter? There's no "official" template, you could either write a free form consent letter, or use Section 7 of the MN1 paper form: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... 2-2020.pdf

9. The two referees are also required to make declarations for our child's MN1 application, what does this mean? Does anyone know how could they make such declarations, please? For example, should the referees each write a letter making such a declaration? Each referee needs to sign a form - no letters, etc: https://visas-immigration.service.gov.u ... on_MN1.pdf (

Sorry for asking so many questions in one thread, but we would be really grateful if anyone could answer these questions. Many thanks.I have answered your queries in brief, if you have further queries please post in this thread.

Dear alterhase58,

Thank you so much for your prompt replies, we are really grateful. Yes you have answered most of our questions, and we just want to clarify with you about the following points:

Q1, yes we will provide the parent's email address and mobile number, but in order to answer the specific MN1 question, should we say the email address belongs to "the applicant" (i.e., my child) or "someone else"? There is no option to further explain who is "someone else" in the MN1 form.

Q3. I am not sure what you mean by saying "the date of arrival"? Would it mean my child's date of birth or the date they came home from the hospital?

Q6. The second referee is also required to be a professional such as a school teacher. We know a potential referee who is teaching my child in school, but they haven't known my child for more than 3 years either. Could we still ask the teacher to be my child's referee? It is difficult to find a UK resident who is a professional and has known and dealt with my child for more than 3 years (my child is only 4.5 years old).

Q7. We believe the option "Yes and it is valid" is the most accurate answer to the BRP question, and we will provide the correct expiry date (which has now passed) for my child's BRP card in the next page of MN1 form. There is, however, no textbox or space for us to put a note saying their BRP has actually expired and is no longer valid, but the expiry date we put in the form would clearly tell the BRP has now expired. What do you think?

Thank you very much again!

Q3. I am not sure what you mean by saying "the date of arrival"? Would it mean my child's date of birth or the date they came home from the hospital? When child moved in.

Q6. The second referee is also required to be a professional such as a school teacher. It is difficult to find a UK resident who is a professional and has known and dealt with my child for more than 3 years (my child is only 4.5 years old). Understand - clearly you have a point - I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem, you can also mention this in your covering note I have suggested below. I can only suggest the official requirements, however I'm sure caseworkers will see the point, for a 4 year old....

Q7. What do you think? You can actually write a covering note and upload with the documents.

Thank you very much again!
