Almost 2 year and counting to get a decision on citizenship application

Case details:
Tier 2 general from - Nov 15 till Nov 20
ILR granted - March 2021
Naturalisation application submitted (for myself and my wife) - April 2022
Biometrics submitted via UKVCAS App - May 2022

We have been waiting for a decision for almost 2 years now (20 months).
We have chased FNE team numbers times (7 times to be precise)
We have tried contacting through our local MP
Most recently submitted a complaint and it was not upheld.

In all the correspondences we have received same response:

registration is not an automatic process, and we have to make a number of enquiries before we can reach a decision on whether to grant citizenship.

Enquiries are not limited to criminal records or to a person’s activities within the United Kingdom. Nor is there a limit set out in nationality law on the time taken to carry out those enquiries. As part of the application process, the Home Office routinely conducts enquiries with other government departments and external agencies. The extent and length of time taken to complete these varies according to the particular circumstance of each application.

The progress of outstanding enquiries is regularly monitored with the agencies carrying out these enquiries on our behalf. It is only when we have the results of the enquiries that we can reach a decision on whether citizenship should be granted. We do not, ourselves, carry out these checks and we cannot, therefore, be sure how long they will take in each case.

I am unable to provide a timescale for the conclusion of your application, but we will contact you once a decision has been made or if we require any additional information.

I am not sure what to make of this response and I have not heard any case taking that long. Naturally this is quite worrying and i am not sure what should be our next steps.

Any guidance would be massively appreciated. Thank you

Did you apply for naturalisation as adults on Form AN? Because the reply refers to "registration", which is a different process to get British citizenship.

So, either you submitted the wrong form, or the Home Office staff have made a mistake.

Worth getting back to them to clarify that you have applied for naturalisation (if that is indeed the case), and not registration. That may possibly be where it is stuck.

Users of the forum have collated some email addresses for UKVI (you probably used some of these already, subject to change, worth trying them all, other members may add more)

furthernationalityenquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk NationalityEnquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk citizenship.Support@homeoffice.gov.uk NationalitySupportTeamFMT@homeoffice.gov.uk

You can submit a complaint following instructions here https://www.gov.uk/government/organisat ... -procedure

You can try to contact your MP and detail the distress the long wait has been causing you.

You could also try a SAR and see if you find out anything of value.
