DOB and Passport from work-related referee (citizenship application)

Hi,
I would like to ask people from work with British citizenship to be my referees (non-professional referral), but I do not want to ask for their personal information, such as passport number and date of birth. I'm happy with asking for contact details for HM to contact them directly. It feels less intrusive and an easier ask.
Is this possible? I can't find any advice online, besides an old article. I can see that the online form doesn't allow you to add "available upon request", and just clicking "no passport available" or giving a wrong date of birth is like asking to get an invalid application.
PS: I've asked in an HM queries form and got a website as a reply talking about countersigning-passport-applications, which is not what I am after as far as I can tell.
Thank you in advance for any help.
Ioannis

There is no such option.
I assume that colleagues don't wish to give you that information. Perhaps better to ask someone else?

You do need this information, find someone you feel comfortable asking this to. It is relatively intrusive, but needed for a successful application.
