Is there any point in following up on naturalisation application before 6 months mark? About 3 months in already, a friend of mine waited for 6 months and after following up they told him that his was approved after 3 months, but he never got the email.

I'm afraid there isn't, because six months is their standard processing time. You'd just get a boilerplate email that your application is being processed.

Really surprised how the system works. My friend just told me that the only reason he learned he was approved was because his council called him saying that his certificate is about to expire - he is doing the ceremony 1 day before the expiration date.

HO isn't famous for timely or precise communications. Good that your friend managed to get support from the council. I guess to cover one's back one could get in touch with the council and ask, but that would create more workload for the councils. Sometimes after following up applicants get the email that they have been approved, but it's very much hit and miss.
