Hi, we want to apply for my wife’s first British passport after naturalisation. We are outside the UK. Can we apply from outside the UK for first British passport with certificate of naturalisation? Many thanks

Very discouraged as it has been interpreted as not wanting to live in the UK long trem. Did your wife get citizenship under Section 6(1) or 6(2)?

Oath ceremony already happened and naturalisation certificate collected few weeks ago. Then left the UK for personal reason. Applied on the basis of spouse of British national. Why do we need to be in the country to apply for passport? I could not find any rules about the residency and passport application.

For Section 6(1) applicants, future intention to stay in the UK is a requirement so applying for first british passport from abroad is seen as contradicting that, members of the forum have reported issues. However this doesn't apply to your wife as Section 6(2) doesn't have the future intention requirement. Please note that applying from abroad takes a lot longer. You will need to send originals of certificate of naturalisation and all uncancelled passports.

You intention of future stay in UK can come under scrutiny.
Also in country application tends to be faster.
