British Citizenship - born in the UK

Hi,

We have a newborn born in the UK and will be able to register his birth soon.

The newborn does not automatically get British citizenship due to the immigration status of the parents. The parents are holding Skilled Worker Visas at the moment. Shortly, the parents are going to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), and thereafter would like to register the newborn for British citizenship if their ILR applications are successful.

We would be grateful for any reply on the following:
- Does the newborn need a passport of his original nationality for British citizenship registration?
- Does the newborn need a visa (i.e., dependent of a Skilled Worker) to be in the UK before his British citizenship registration if he is not going abroad in the foreseeable future before the registration?
- Does the newborn need to apply for ILR together with the parents before his British citizenship registration if he is not going abroad in the foreseeable future before the registration?

Many thanks!

No.

No. Note however, that you are only entitled to 3 months free NHS for the baby. Plan accordingly and get medical insurance.

No.

No. But be aware that free NHS health care will only cover them for the first three months. After that, with no visa status, the NHS may charge them/you 150% of costs. You may want to get private health insurance for the period between the end of three months and the receipt of the registration certificate.

Same as the above.
