How do I prove that a grandfather was a British Citizen? And some other questions. MN1 3(2)

I: born 2007, Greece, Cypriot Citizen
Father: Born 1970, Cyprus, Cypriot & British Citizen
Grandfather: Born 1930s, Cypriot & British Citizen

I have identification for my grandpa from Cyprus, and as my dad is a British Citizen (and he says he got it when he was a child so he must have gotten it from his father) then my grandpa must be a citizen of some sort, be it by descent or not by descent. I do not have any british identification and can’t seem to find a way to get copies.

I am trying to register through MN1 3(2) which would mean my grandpa has to be a citizen not by descent, but I do not know how to prove any of it. My grandpa did work at the British Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus, I don’t know if this proves anything, but it seems like important information.

My dad also remembers getting his citizenship in line with my grandpa which I believe can only be true if the father can automatically pass on their citizenship (meaning that the grandpa is a citizen not by descent) but all of this is unprovable.

I have the ability to produce any Cypriot identification for him, so the british part is the issue.

Any ideas on what I can do? I am lost here…

Have you tried contacting the national archives to see if they have any records of your father/grandfather?

National Archives: Naturalisation, registration and British citizenship

Check for both your father and your grandfather. It is not impossible that your father may have been registered by your grandfather.

Did your grandfather live in the UK (not the Base Areas, but the UK itself) at any time for any continuous period of five years before 1983?

It may be important as to who registered them (i.e. were they registered by the Home Office in the UK, the administrator of the Sovereign Base Areas, or by the Governor of Cyprus, before Cypriot independence), as well as the section of the 1948 Act under which they were registered.

An MN1 registration needs to be applied for before your 18th birthday.

Also note that, registration under Section 3(2) will make you a British citizen by descent yourself, so any children born to you outside the UK will not be British citizens automatically.

And be aware that even if you do get British citizenship, you will be treated as an overseas student if you plan to go to an English university, unless you have resided in the UK for at least three continuous years immediately before the first day of the first year of the university course.

They don’t hold records of overseas registrations/whatever

The High Commission said that all the records they had, got transferred to the UK.

They they rerouted the phone to UKVI, which wasn’t really helpful.

I’ll reply to you later, I have to do some digging.

My grandpa has not lived in the UK.

We have no clue who registered him, since we don’t have any documents and because the High Commission has no idea either.

I know that my great grandpa served in the RAF and if I remember correctly was Killed in Action.
If that would somehow allow him (great grandpa) to gain Citizenship, why would my dad get Citizenship? My grandpa has not been in the UK, so I don’t get how my dad can be a double descent citizen.

Have you checked the National Archives for both naturalisation and registration records?

Remember to check for all combinations of names (such as just first+last names, first+middle+last names, nickname+last name, etc).

Do you have any written records of your grandfather serving/dying in service?

Yes, but it was my great grandfather who died in service.

If your claim to citizenship goes all teh way back then, it is useful to reconstruct that history as well.
