Hi everyone,

Thanks in advance for any advice or insights you might be able to share — I really appreciate the help!

-Background
I’m originally from Mexico and my wife is from the EU.
We lived in the UK from 2012 to 2022 and both became British citizens by naturalisation in 2021/2022.
We moved abroad in 2022, and our child was born outside the UK in late 2023.

We’re now wondering if there’s a way for our child to be registered as a British citizen, even though he was born outside the UK and after we left.

Some questions we have:

1. Is it possible to apply to register a child as British in this situation?
2. If yes, would we (or the child) need to be in the UK to apply?
3. Would it make a difference if we traveled back to the UK during the application process?

Eventually, we do plan to return to the UK — not immediately, but it’s definitely somewhere we’d like to settle again in the future.

Any insights or experiences would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

Best,

Ivan

Child is British as was born to British citizens, and can apply for a British passport. No requirement to register.
