Hi All,

I have a newborn kid, for whom I am planning to apply for British passport from India. I have got British passport and I am also planning to apply for dependant visa for my wife, and we 3 would like to travel along.

Can you please help me confirm the list of supporting documents for this application. From the gov.uk page, I understand it is as below.
  • Father's British Passport
  • Mother's Indian Passport
  • Mother's Indian ID Proof (Aadhar or Similar)
  • Our Marriage Certificate
  • Child's birth certificate
  • Father's Naturalisation Certificate ?
  • Countersignature (I saw on this forum that it can be digitally signed !)
Also, may I know the current timelines to process the application. I tried looking in the timelines thread, but couldn't find any case matching my requirement in 2025, hence requesting.

Thanks for your support.

If those are the documents the system advises to send in your case, send that. Yes, countersignatory can confirm identity online. Passports are processed in 3 weeks in the U but applications for first passports from south Asia are known to take up to six months or even a year.

Assuming that the child was born on or after the date of your naturalisation certificate, start here.

Be aware that first British passports for children born on the Subcontinent can take six months to a year.

You may also want to look at applying for a CoE-RoA in the child's Indian passport (so you'd have to apply for that if you haven't already), getting them to the UK and then applying for their first British passport from within the UK.

As an aside, be aware that the child would be a British citizen by descent and their children (your grandchildren) will not be British citizens if born outside the UK.
