Hi,

Hopefully someone can help answer a couple of questions regarding getting a british citizenship based on being born before 1983 (born 1971) to a british mother.

1. Do you agree I met the requirements

• - I was born before 1983 - yes - 1971
  - My mother was born in England (1942)
  - I have the right of abode via my mother ( UKM Guide - page 4 b. (i) your mother was at the time of birth a citizen of the UK and colonies by birth)
  - I am of good character.

2. If so, can someone answer the following queries regarding the UKM form

• (a) 1.7 National Insurance Number. (page 2)
  As I live in Australia and only visited England I don't have a NIN so this would be blank - correct?

• (b) 2.5 Address of Tax Office or Tax Office Reference (page 5)
  In Australia, this would refer to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Would I put the address of the local Australian office and possibly my Australian Tax File Number? Doesn't seem to make much sense, maybe leave it blank?

Sounds like you meet the tests for registration in (1). Mum was a CUKC at the time of your birth; you would have been British by descent at birth had mothers transmitted their CUKC status in 1971, and you would have become a BC in 1983.

If you leave the boxes in (2) blank and HO have a violent objection they will just ask you to fill in the blanks. I doubt they will be accessing Australian tax records so leave blank.

You will not, of course, be able to convey British nationality to your own children if they are born outside the UK because you are British "by descent".
