I am in the process of filling out form AN and was

wondering what the UKBA class as a "relative" when it says that the referee must not be related

to the applicant and the other referee.

I have just noticed that on of my referees has the same surname as me, even though we are not related - is the UKBa likely to look into this further?

There does not appear to be hard and fast rules on this.

They will assume that you are related but you could write a letter explaining this.

How about family friends? Can they be referees?

Yes they can. In fact I got both the signatures from family friends and it was mentioned that they knew as family friends in the application itself.

No need to attach letters. They will just complete the form.

No letters were attached. Referees just entered the details in the form they were asked for.
