Hi all,
I have done the ceremony and got the certificate of naturalisation today, my question is can I wait and apply for my British Passport after 2 months as I'm going abroad, and can I go abroad and when I come back inter the UK using my ILR?

Many thanks for your help, and all the best for who are waiting

The thread is only for posting timelines. Not for asking questions, you should have opened your own thread or used the other sticky thread for post- citizenship questions. Anyway, there is no requirement for anyone to have a passport unless you are traveling. Just a few posts above yours a discussion had already happened re: being a British citizen but traveling on your old passport - it's fine. Please search the forum if you want more info, lots of previous discussions on this topic already.

Post by nishu » Mon Jul 08, 2013 12:45 pm

Congratulation! Quick question which country did you travel to? I am in same situation and has to go to India but I got BC end of last month. I was just wondering if i can travel to India on India passport without any penalty? I have read somehwere that there is 3 months grace period from date of citizenship for india. is it true? I have applied or British passport but not sure if i will have enough time for indian visa. Thanks

By the way folks I came from my holiday and entered the UK 2 days ago without a UK passport. (Because an unexpected illness in my family
necessitated me travelling before i had a chance to apply for a UK passport. )

I filled in the landing card and presented my ILR card to the immigration officer.
I explained the situation and told him that i was a British citizen . He then took my finger prints using the electronic reader on the counter . Then he too confirmed that i am a British citizen then i passed thru.

Brothers and Sisters many of you wonder and i know that this question was asked in different topics but i still want to answer .
When i asked the UKBA officer very same question he confirmed me !!!

So if you dont have time to get your UK passport or in case of emergency you can travel in and out of the UK using your ILR card.

I just wanted to share my experience with you .

Got my passport today! :D

I'm so happy because I am travelling THIS FRIDAY, the 12th July and I was so worried I wouldn't get it in time.

I'm not gonna say this was a long journey for me because it wasn't. My mum did everything; the only thing I did myself was my naturalisation and then my passport.

I'm gonna stick around on the board to give advice when I can, and my mum is gonna apply for her naturalisation soon too so I'll put up her timeline.

Hello nishu thanks and congrats

As a British citizen you can use other nationality passports and with your indian passport you can travel in and out of the UK . But when you come back to UK you should have your ILR with you.
There are no country restrictions. You can go to any country.

If you dont have time to apply for a British passport, because it usually takes minimum a month. Just travel with your Non-British passport
and as i said when you come back to UK show your ILR to the immigration officer.

I think it is quite useful to have 'real time' information about the most recent applications . I applied for my passport on the 21/06 and I find it very useful to know how people that applied just before me are getting on. Myself I have just been editing my original post without unnecessarily flood the forum at every change of status.
I concur.
I agree as well. I am watching those around my own dates with great interest and quiet support!

thanks for everyone in this forum and good luck to all.

ps. post office check and send service found an error and fixed on the form, some people said it was unnecessary but mistakes happen, so i can advise to use them. mistake was with the naturalisation date's month ( i puth wrong month in number format )

ps2. i called the help line to check my app status yesterday (roughly it is 11 days from the day you receive the sms according to other's posts here and mine was late), they said they have sent an interview letter out just today (yesterday 23 jul) and i'll receive it in the next few days.i asked them if i can book an interview date, they said not before letter arrives.then i called the interview booking line instead (their numbers are available on the forum) i asked if i can book an interview, they said they need the ref number, i said i don't have the letter but i know my app has been proceed because i called the help line earlier.lady convinced and after going through some security steps she proceed with the appoitment which was earliest in london for 28th july i asked if there is an earlier date in nearby towns she said no! i was suspicios about the fast respomse and after hanging up, i decided to call them again to check the dates for nearby towns, i asked another person that i have an appointment but i want to change the date, man said he needs ref number, as i don't have he couldn't change it or tell me the available dates ! this time ! i called the help line again , told them i booked an appointment but i don't know the ref number, going through some security questions i learned the number and callled back the appoitment line again , asked the man for the available dates and i found one available today (24th at luton) and i changed it, but he told me that i need the interview letter to bring with me even though it's not written anywhere that i had to.luckly, this morning i received the letter and went to interview with that. first thing they asked was the letter, i think it is needed for ref number and it might be ok without the letter not sure.

Date of Passport Appointment: 26th July 2013
Date of Passport Receipt: 30th July 2013 (chucked through letterbox by courier I think, just saw a car drive off they didn't knock)

I'd recommend PO Check & Send! it only actually just costs less than £2 extra since Special Delivery costs £6.95 anyway & you have to go to Post Office to send self application anyway. The lady noticed a mistake I'd made (am usually good with forms) & she helped manipulate the declaration date because I'd signed form as today 11/7 but my referee had signed 4/7 so she changed it to 01/7 because for legal reasons my referee cannot sign prior to my declaration. No doubt she's saved me a lot of bother.

I received a letter today (13/07/2013) requesting that I send more recent photos. I have no idea how they know that my photos are older than a month as I am sure that I have not submitted the same photos before. Thankfully, they do NOT require me to get my referee to counter-sign again. They supplied a sticker that I have to attach to my return envelope. It contains their address, name of the specific case worker and a reference number. I presume that this will allow them to route and process the application quicker.

Date of receipt of interview letter:
Date of return of documents:
Date of passport appointment:
Date of passport receipt:

My suggestion is not to waste time with old photos although I know that many have gotten away with it. Eliminate the additional potential stress and spend the extra £5 to get some new photos.

Yours seems to be the only case which has not even acknowledged by IPS after more than a month.
Have you really applied on 13th of June or made a mistake and it should be 13 July?
