Citizenship application for spouse

Hi,

I have indefinite leave to remain (ILR) in the UK and will apply for the british citizenship next month.

My wife is currently on dependent ILR visa. She is now eligible for the indefinite leave to remain in the UK as she has completed 2 years as my dependant. I read on the UKBA's website that she can apply for the british citizenship after 3 years of residence in the UK.

My question is, does she need to apply for the indefinite leave to remain in the UK first and then apply for the british citizenship? Or can she directly apply for the british citizenship after completing 3 years as my dependent in the UK (without applying for the ILR)? Note that her current visa is valid until Sep 2013 which will cover her 3 years of stay in the UK.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Regards.

One should be free of immigration restrictions when applying for naturalisation. So, yes she should get ILR first.

Many thanks.

A couple of queries while trying to fill the forms:

1. She never worked in the UK so doesn't have a NI number? What should I fill in the boxes against NI?
2. She passed IELTS with score 5.5. Does she meet the English speaking requirements?!

Thanks.
