ILR long residency - type of visa/extension

Hi all, and thank you in advance for your help.
I had a consultation today regarding ILR based on 10 year. I have 4 years as dependent followed by 6 years as student. The switch was made outside the UK (I think I had to-).
My adviser said that a change from Residence Permit visa type (Leave to remain) to a Entry Clearance visa type (leave to enter) is a big problem in my case - not allowed in continuous stay calculations.
Is it really - all I read included no mention of type of visa as long it is there - others however mentioned that some visas are not accepted such as tourist visa...
I am in a total confusion. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
