ILR Dependent Query

Hi
I have couple of questions regarding dependent ILR.
1- I'll apply for ILR in May 2014 however due to new rules came into effect after 09 July 2012 my wife's five years as a dependent will be completed in December 2014. Our visas are valid till August 2015. If I get my ILR in May 2014 can my wife stay on the same visa and apply for ILR when her five years complete or she has to apply for dependent of ILR applicant.
2- My wife is going to visit family back home and planning to stay for around 6 months. Would this affect her Eligibility to apply for ILR.
