ILR - Lapse

Hi
I hold an ILR since 2007. My problem here is that i am out of UK since 31st december 2010 . I heard that if someone who is on ILR is out of country for more than 2 yrs they ILR will lapse . can someone tell me how far is it true??
And if i want to return back to UK before the give time frame when can i go back ? As i have mentioned above i left the UK on 31st december 2010 and it not beyond 2yrs so cani go back in mid december .

I was really worried regarding this . will they be any problem at immigration
