Hello,
I am applying for ILR in Jan 2013. I was away for a period of 48 days due to my father's health issues and had left my job that time. I came back for 3 days, took an job offer in UK and went back for 40 days again for his treatment.
Do i need to provide evidence for these absences?

As long as your total absences in 5 years are not more than 180 and you have no single absence over 90 days, you don't need to provide any evidence.

Can you point me where it is written in rule?

You need to provide personal letter with details of reason and medical certificate

Linkers, this was true before 13th Dec 2012, when some immigration rule changes (with respect to the number of absences allowed for economic migrants) came into effect. The latest rules around absences are available under:
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/polic ... es/part6a/
OP, as already stated, you will need to provide evidence to support this absence which would be considered an absence due to serious or compelling compassionate reasons.
