I plan to apply for ILR in Sep 2013 and I'm creating a spreadsheet to list out all the days that I have been absent from the UK.

On page 9 of http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitec ... iew=Binary, it says that the continuous period runs from 11 November 2012 to 10 November 2011, if your application is made on 11 November 2012. If we count backwards, I do not understand why the ending date for each continuous period is 10 November. Is the end date a mistake? Wouldn't the ending date for that period be 12 November 2012 instead? Please advise if this is correct or not, and, if the document is correct, why?

This document is correct. The year when calculating days in always counted like that.

Why is financial year in most of the places are from 1st April to 31st March?

Also you need to remember that you are calculating backwards and not forward.

Forgive me if I'm sounding daft, but if you have a from date of 11 November 2012 and a to date of 10 November 2011, and you still count backwards, you end up with two extra days in that period. Taking the financial year example, if you applied on the 31 March, I'd expect the continuous period to end on 1 April, but if you follow the guidelines it's more like 30 March.

e.g. 11 November 2012, 10 November 2012, 9 November 2012, 8 November 2012, ....., ....., 13 November 2011, 12 November 2011 (it should stop here), 11 November 2011 (1st extra day), 10 November 2011 (2nd extra day).

Am I missing something completely obvious?

Is anyone able to clarify my original question? The continuous period dates in the document don't make sense, i.e. the number of days in that period is more than 365.

Sorry but it's hard to locate a real question as it seems it is just your understanding which seems to be different.

My question is why do the continuous periods overlap each other? If Year 1 ends at 10 November 2011, why does Year 2 start at 11 November 2011? If you count backwards, you are counting 10 November 2011 twice. Are the from and to dates meant to be "inclusive"?
