Can I apply for ILR after working and studying in UK

Hi All,
I'm currently working in UK under Tier 2 ICT ( visa apply Oct 2009 ) and I'm planning to pursue MBA course. I would like to know if I can apply for ILR status after getting Tier 4 General ( student visa ). Reason is since my visa is applied before the new rules I have option for ILR after completing 5 yrs on same visa. But if I switch visa would it still be valid.
Any response would be highly appreciated.
