ILR Broken

Hello to everyone,
Actually, I have been in this country nearly 8 and half years on student tier 4 visa but my university did not extend my visa due to 5-year cap and told me to apply for a new visa from abroad. I leave the UK with valid visa on my passport and I applied fresh application from abroad on basis of research studies short-term student visa and then I came back within 6 months but I did not apply fresh visa application within 28 days due to illness.
Can anybody guide me that can I still go on 10 years rule or my 10-year long residency broken? and what type of medical evidence (like illness) home office accepted in medical circumstances?
Thanks

As long as you left with valid leave and returned with valid leave within 180 day, your continuity is maintained.
