expired residence permit return to UK

I am returning to UK with my Husband and 3 children next year from Australia. My husband is a UK passport holder and so are all of my children but I am an Australian resident who used to live in UK (for 10 years). My husband and I went to live in Australia to help my mother who was struggling with debt. I have an expired UK residence permit (expired 2012) and was wondering what VISA I should apply for - can I get my residency permit reinstated or do I have to start over? Any advice would be most welcome.
