English Proficiency requirement for ILR

Hi,

My wife is applying for ILR and we are confused with English proficiency requirement. She has completed her Bachelor and Masters from Mumbai university that was in English.

In the beginning of the application it asked if she has a degree certificate for which she responded yes. Now at the end of the application when confirming the mandatory doxuments, it has a line item mentioning "Ecctis letter that confirms the qualification meets or exceeds the recognised standard of a Bachelor's or Masters degree...." Until this is not ticked, the application is not allowing to continue.

So submitting Ecctis letter has now become mandatory even if she has a degree certificate? I am also on ILR and throughout my previous visa applications, my degree certificate was accepted and didn't have to get NARIC letter (my bachelor and masters are same as her from mumbai university). My wife also had 3 visas (first entry, then 2 BRPs) and never had to get this letter as Mumbai university degree certificate was enough, so has this changed since Jan 2019 and now compulsory to get letter from Ecctis if degree certificate is from outside UK?

Mnay thanks for your reply.

If she holds a PBS dependent visa (you don't state what visa she holds so guessing here), then she was NOT required to prove meeting the English language requirement at any time for her dependent visa

She needs to meet this requirement for ilr and if using a foreign degree, she needs ecctis. Her application for ilr could be refused for not meeting the English requirment.

Why not just do the B1 English test, it is quicker

Understood, many thanks for your response.

One last question - her current BRP is in maiden name but recently she renewed her passport and now it is in married name, my passport contains her maiden name under wife/spouse and my name is also in her new passport (just to prove the spouse relationship).

I presume the applciation should be in new name? The reason I am asking this is because, the documents that she has to confirm at the end, mentions the applicant name that is on this ILR application and she obviously doesnt have degree certificate and current BRP in her married name, so her new passport, my passport and marriage certificate suffices the requirement and the application should be in new name?

On a side note, we have our marriage certificate from India (issued by our local municipality) and it is in English but sometimes we have had some issues in UK (mostly Banks) in accepting that. So just for peace of mind, what are the steps to have a supplement marriage certificate/notary issued in UK that can be acepted in UK?

You can use both names in the UK. Use the name as it is in the passport for the application
