How many days absences are allowed before applying for ILR?

Hi all,
I’m making this post on behalf of my cousin and would welcome any advice in this regard.
My cousin’s wife is a doctor, she’s based in Africa and has recently been offered a job by an NHS Trust. She has been issued a Certificate of Sponsorship and about to apply for a work visa.
The husband has a good job and does not plan to resign from it immediately but intends to be visiting his wife and children in the UK every few months. I have explained to him that in terms of securing ILR he’s expected to live in the UK with the rest of the family. I know there’s a limit to how long someone is allowed to be out of the country in a given period. Could someone please let me know how many days absences are allowed?
I’m I also right in thinking that the qualifying period for ILR is 5 years?
Thank you!
