Hi everyone,
I have applied to ILR 2 days ago after staying 5 years in the UK as a refugee. In june 2022 i was sent a letter from the universal credit that i was overpaid an amount of 20,988£ which is all the money i got from them between 2019 and 2022, i appealed and nothing changed, and i still didn’t pay anything i didn’t contact them for a repayment plan, eventho this amount was calculated wrongly and i was entitled from June 2013 till July 2021.
Can this debt affect my IRL application?
And what’s the best way to deal with this claim? I didn’t make a move since i got the letter.
Thank you

It should not affect your ILR. ILR for refugees will take several weeks to months, so sit tight

Can you please explain more details? Like the Home office will not check my debts with the Universal Credit or the DWP?

There is nothing in the rules that says such a situation leads to refusal. Being incorrectly paid benefits is not your issue.
Refugee ILR and Universal Credit Overpayment

Hello everyone,
I recently applied for ILR two weeks ago after residing in the UK for five years as a refugee. In June 2022, I received a letter from Universal Credit stating that I had been overpaid £20,988, which represents all the money I received from them between 2019 and 2022. I appealed this decision, but unfortunately, nothing changed, and I have not yet initiated any repayment plan or contacted them, despite believing that the amount was incorrectly calculated and that I was entitled to these benefits from June 2019 to July 2021.
Could this debt affect my ILR application? What is the best way to address this claim? I have not taken any action since receiving the letter.
Thank you.
