Passport lost before applying for ILR?

This query is more pertinent here.

a) What happens if you lose your passport when abroad just before applying for ILR?;

a)
1) Do you get another free entry into the UK with a new passport (which will probably take ages to get) and copies of your old visa, reference number etc?
2) Do you apply for ILR or Ind. Leave to Enter from outside the UK with the new passport?
3) Do you apply for an entry clearance/spouse or fiance visa/ and only upon arrival in the UK you apply for ILR?

b) What happens if you lost it when in the UK?

b)
What is the process, as obtaining a new passport from any country's consulate may take some time, and by that time your existing visa would have expired. Do you:

1) write a letter to the HO; or
2) apply without a passport?

We all hope that this would never happen to us, alas, things happen and especially before the time comes to apply for ILR you get paranoid etc.

I should have added the following in my question:

What about the visa expiring when you lost it and BEFORE applying for ILR and before managing to obtain a new passport to place your old visa in? You technically have NO VALID VISA and can not make an application for an extension or ILR. What do you do then?

The link you gave me below is understandable, my question is a bit more complicated.
