ILR query- Currently on Tier1General but marrying UK Citizen

I've lived in the UK for 3.5 years on Student, International Graduate Scheme, Tier 1 (Post Study) and Tier 1 (General) visas.

I've just received 3 years leave in November 2009 under the Tier 1 (general) category, but will be getting married to a UK citizen this year. In order to qualify for the shortened ILR residency period (2 years instead of 5 years), must I switch onto a spouse visa instead?

Or, can I apply for ILR after 2 years of marriage while my current Tier 1(General) visa?

Just trying to figure out what would be the best course of action to save time/money!

Yes, if you wish to apply for ILR as a spouse of British citizen, you will have to change your immigration status from Tier 1 (General) migrant to that of spouse of British citizen/ settled person.

Please check with UKBA whether you are allowed to switch or will you need to return to home country to do so!
