I have heard many people saying that HO does external checks during appointment for ILR at PEO. Does anyone has any idea what these external checks are?

DO they also check details about initial HSMP?

In my case, they had details about my first WP and these details were entered by the person who was checking the document before the actual appt.
Best policy is to be honest as they have access to pretty much all info from various gov. agencies.

I agree with diago_nelson here. I recall that when I did my interview at the PEO Cardiff, they refused to give me my documents (this was during the PCSU strike in early March 2010) saying they wanted to do more external checks with other allied agencies, which may vary from taxes, Criminal records, absenses from the UK durinf your stay e.t.c.
I will advice that you do not underestimate what kind of checks are being performed, just make sure you are sincere with your application and back all with correct evidences
