Thanks Giz, but there will be a change starting august 2, I was a bit confuse if I can use my VISA debit card on August 19 bec on their website the message is:

''From Monday 2 August 2010 all our public enquiry offices in the UK will no longer accept cash as payment for applications.

You will still have the option to pay by credit card, bankers draft or postal order.'''http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/conta ... ginperson/.

Postal order - peace of mind.

Plan B: Credit Card

The application forms say :-
How can you pay ?
You must pay by one of the methods specified below.
• Cheque
• Postal Order
• Credit card - Visa (including Electron) or MasterCard only
• Debit card - Delta, Maestro* (including Solo)
• Banker’s draft
• Cash - but only for applications at a Public Enquiry Office;
please don’t send cash by post.
So now they are merely saying that as from 02.08.10 they will not take cash at PEOs, but that presumably leaves all the other options still available.

John quite clearly gives the answer here - I see Visa & Delta on the list. Visa Debit used to be Delta but rebranded to Visa Debit in 2009 (I work for a bank hence the reason I know this). UKBA need to amend their form.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_Debit

The new form states exactly the same except cash is no longer listed.

Thanks kiwigirl. It's very clear now that VISA debit card originally branded "Delta" in the United Kingdom.

that explains all.. thaks a lot guys...

has any one taken a banker draft? how much the bank charges for that?

i think 250£ is the maximum per postal order and 10£ charges, which makes 5 postal orders for 1095, approx 50£ charges I guess thats huge.

Thanks
Chandra

It depends on which bank you bank with. It can range anything from £10 to £25 per cheque. But it's guaranteed that the cheque will clear and it's instant payment to the payee, i.e. they don't have to wait the standard 3 days clearing time.

kiwigirl25, whilst noticing what you post, there is no obligation on UKBA to accept a bankers draft on a "will definitely clear" basis. They might insist that the visa is not issued until the funds are in their bank account, which effectively means that it could be a nonsense using a Bankers Draft at a PEO.

It is not unknown for a Bankers Draft to be forged, but I hasten to add that I am absolutely not saying that any member of this Board would use a forged one. But I am saying why UKBA might want to wait before issuing the visa.

Far better in my opinion using a debit or credit card, which does amount to instant clearance of the funds.

Sorry I can only advise from a normal everyday banking point of view. I was justifying the fees the bank charge. Most businesses will readily accept a banker's draft as guaranteed form of payment, I had assumed that UKBA followed this rule. Now if UKBA will delay an appliction for this form of payment this needs to be clearly stated in the guidelines. What if you don't have a credit or debit card? Is it best to apply by post as it's not guaranteed you will get a "same day service" if paying by cheque/draft/postal order at a PEO appointment?

Potential forgery reasons for not accepting a Banker's draft or similar hadn't even crossed my mind

Is there any form of payment that is risk free within UKBA? If you read the board even people who pay with credit or debit card, with adequate funds in the account, are rejected. Albeit mainly postal applications. Even with credit card payments it is very easy for someone to walk out of the UKBA office, phone the bank and cancel the transaction. If UKBA want an instant form of guaranteed payment they should have stuck with cash payments and debits cards only.

That's today's rant at the UKBA
