Which visa have you had for 7 years?
ILR routes are as follows:
1- 5 continuous years on work related visa (4 years if covered by HSMP JR or 5 years on other work visa e.g. Tier 1, Work Permit, Tier 2)
2- 2 continuous years on marraige visa as dependent of settled person
3- 10 continuous years of lawful stay in UK (any lawfuly UK visa)
4- 14 Years stay in UK (if here without a valid visa and hence living illegally)

thanks, for your reply.
category, Indefinite leave to remain
i came to the UK in may 2004, on a 2 year working holiday visa, after 2 years i then extended to a student visa and have been on it for 4 years and then extended that to a 2 year postwork study visa on july 2010 which runs out in july 2012. by then i will be 8years and 2 month in the country.
i actually want to apply for ILR in may 2012 or before, do you think i have a chance of getting it.

Given your immigration history and unless you switch to
FLR(M) before May 2012, the
earliest you may become eligible for settlement will be in May 2014 - under the 10 year
long residence category.
