elgibility date for ILR

Hi,
I came into this country on student visa in sept 2003, and in July 2006 my work permit was approved whilst working for my employer itself on student visa (part time) but the Leave to Remain was granted in October 2006 and is given till 17th october 2011, so when do i need to apply for ILR,
1) so will it be June or sept 2011 to apply for ILR?
2) If only in sept, is there any way i can apply earlier than the due date,
3) And will it be better to apply through solicitor or self.
4) Any good experienced solicitor recommended.
