English and Life in the UK

Hello,

I hope everyone is doing well. I know this question has been brought up before, but although I have read up, I haven't been able to fully understand which testing scenario applies to my case.

My wife who is an indian national, currently nearing the end of her settlement visa period shall be applying for ILR in September 2011 - i.e., later this year.

My question is:

1. Does my wife have to do an ESL Course and the Life in the UK test?
2. Does she have to simply do an English test and the Life in the UK test?
3. If her english is up to par, is she exempt from the English bit and only have to do the Life in the UK test?
4. If she has to do both, can she do a course which combines both the English and UK Life aspect? In this case, is she exempt from the tests?

I would greatly appreciate your help in this regard.

Kind Regards,
khana2011

Thank you for your quick and brief response.

One last thing if you don't mind. From what I understand based on your response is that the english language test is only necessary in the case that the applicant for ILR doesn't know enough english to understand and complete the life in the uk test? Correct?
